Social Tango takes over the Vernon Performing Arts Centre stage Oct. 28.

The sensual passion of tango comes to town with Social Tango from Argentina Monday.

The Vernon Performing Arts Centre's (VDPAC) special 2024-25 Spotlight Dance Series presentation explores the social value of dance, celebrating tango community through the skillfully coordinated mediums of dance, music and film Oct. 28 at 7:30 p.m.

Tango lovers – and all lovers of dance – are invited to experience an unforgettable evening set to the rhythm of this popular dance in the intimacy of a milonga, recreated by multi-disciplinary choreographer Agustina Videla.

“This work is a way to celebrate tango as a dance accessible to all of us, and the milonga as a place that creates community," said Videla.

Be it the music, beauty, or sense of connection, tango has always won hearts worldwide. Across cultures and generations, this “conversation between bodies” enables people to meet in an “embrace.”

The performance features an original score, a music quartet, a live singer and 10 remarkable dancers to fill VDPAC’s mainstage and the hearts of all audience members.

“Social Tango blends dance, live music and film to create an authentic, immersive experience," said VDPAC’s Erin Kennedy. "This love story will sweep you away for an evening in the heart of Buenos Aires...in Vernon!

The performance aims to inspire audience members to join the dance floor and cultivate tango communities worldwide.

City Dance will provide eight local dancers to take part in the performance, led by Heather Stranks and Jens Groener.

Post-show, Social Tango Project will host a 15-minute tango class and a 45-minute Milonga Dance Party on the VDPAC’s main stage for the audience for one hour after the performance. Limited participant capacity only.
