The operators of a Vernon housing complex where a fire broke out and injured one person Wednesday afternoon are lauding the timely response of firefighters and paramedics.
The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Vernon and District operates Albert Place II, an affordable rental complex on 25th Avenue completed in 2022.
Smoke and flames were reported coming from one of the ground-level units at Albert Place around 4 p.m. Feb. 7. Vernon Fire Rescue Services rushed to the scene and could be seen providing medical attention to a person who was reportedly badly burned in the blaze. The person was soon taken to hospital by ambulance.
Fire Chief David Lind said the quick work of his crew managed to contain the fire to a single unit.
CMHA Vernon executive director Julia Payson credits those who responded quickly to the incident while promising to support the injured resident.
“We are grateful for the immediate response of Vernon Fire Rescue, BC Ambulance Service and members of our housing team, and we thank them for their quick action and professionalism,” said Payson.
“Our thoughts are with the resident of the unit who was injured and transported to hospital. We will continue to provide support to them as well as the other residents of Albert Place II and the broader community of CMHA participants and staff.”
Vernon Fire Rescue Service is expected to be on scene today, Feb. 8, to determine the cause of the fire, and CMHA Vernon staff are set to determine the extent of the damage to the unit where the fire originated.
