Frostival to freeze downtown Vernon traffic routes Friday

Temporary road closures will be in effect on portions of 30th Avenue, 31st Street and 33rd Street Friday

The City of Vernon is giving drivers a heads up that there will be downtown road closures Friday to make way for a new winter festival.

The Downtown Vernon Association has created a new event, Frostival, to kick off the holiday season. Frostival will take place from 4-8 p.m. Nov. 29.

To make room for the event, the city will be closing vehicle access to 30th Avenue between 30th and 34th streets; 31st Street between 31st and 29th avenues; and 33rd Street between 31st Avenue and Coldstream Avenue.

The road closures will begin as early as 8:30 a.m.

Highway 97 will remain open to through traffic during the event, with barricades in place on 30th Avenue.

There will also be temporary changes for Vernon Regional Transit. Detours will affect transit routes 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8 due to the downtown road closures. The downtown transit exchange will remain operational and updates on routes and detours can be found on BC Transit's website
