Note to Vernon School District Grade 12 students: your experiences with Vernon Winter Carnival could lock up a scholarship from Carnival and The Stor-It Place.
Carnival is again asking graduating students to submit a short essay about the impact Vernon Winter Carnival has had on their life.
Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded.
"Over the past four years more than 50 students have applied for the scholarship sharing their personal experiences with Vernon Winter Carnival," said Carnival society chairperson Laurell Cornell."
"This scholarship opportunity was created not only to engage our younger generations in the festival, but to listen to the stories of what memories and events are important to the future of our community.
“It’s been really amazing to hear what these young adults remember from their childhood Vernon Winter Carnivals.”
The essay’s from last years recipients can be found in the Carnival brochure available throughout the city or online at https://vernonwintercarnival.com/traditions/awards-honours/.
Applications must be submitted to Vernon Winter Carnival no later than Monday, Feb. 10, at 5 p.m. Recipients of the scholarships will be announced – with Carnival love – Feb.14, Valentine's Day.
"Investing in our youth’s continued education and the spirit of Vernon Winter Carnival is what community is all about," said Kim Wallace, Stor-It Place general manager. “This scholarship initiative is not only about our youth, it’s about keeping this community tradition alive for all members of this community.”
The criteria
Submit one to two pages (minimum 500 words); Topics can include:
• Favourite Vernon Winter Carnival experience;
• Why you think Vernon Winter Carnival is important to the community;
• How Vernon Winter Carnival has impacted traditions in your family.
