The walls in Vernon swimmer Alexanne Lepage’s Calgary accommodation are being overrun with medals.
The University of Calgary Dinos swimming sensation added more hardware to her growing collection as she made her first Canada West championship meet in her home Calgary pool a memorable one.
The first-year engineering student won four gold medals in all four of her events, all within 24 hours.
Lepage, the reigning Junior World champion, set a career personal best in the 100-metre breaststroke (1 minute 6.12 seconds), 200m breast (2:25.49) and 200m individual medley (2:12.74). She also clocked in just more than four seconds of her competitors to win the 400m IM (4:42.83).
She added three relay medals - gold in the 400m freestyle relay, and silver in the 800m free and 400m medley.
Lepage was awarded multiple meet honours, including Canada West Rookie and Female Swimmer of the Year, and was named U-SPORTS’ Women’s Swimmer of the Week.
“I am really happy with my performances this weekend,” said Lepage, a Vernon Kokanee Swim Club alumna, to the University of Calgary athletics website. “Coming from a very small club, there was never really an exciting team atmosphere and it has been so amazing to train and compete with this team. I love racing for the Dinos.”
Fellow former Kokanee swimmer Kelsey Fillion added her first CW gold medal at the championships.
Swimming for the University of Manitoba Bisons, Fillion, from Coldstream, won the women’s 100m free race in 55.81 seconds. Fillion, in her third year with the Bisons, added silver in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay.
Lepage and the Dinos women finished second in the team standings behind the UBC Thunderbirds. Fillion and the Bisons were fifth.
