Head outside or inside for North Okanagan Remembrance Day services

Ceremonies honouring Canada's veterans will be held indoors and and outdoors in the North Okanagan Monday, Nov. 11

Those wishing to pay tribute to the region's veterans can do so both indoors and outdoors Monday.

Remembrance Day ceremonies will be held throughout the North Okanagan on the morning of Nov. 11.

Vernon will have ceremonies simultaneously at Kal Tire Place (KTP) and at Vernon's Cenotaph Park on 30th Street.

The Army, Navy and Air Force Unit #5 (ANAF) and Elks Lodge #45 will again host a brief ceremony at the Cenotaph park in downtown Vernon Monday, starting at approximately 10:40 a.m. The two non-profit organizations partnered last year to organize a grass roots ceremony.

They would like to invite community members to join them and any dignitaries to contact organizers if they would like to lay a wreath during the ceremony.

“We were pleased with the ceremony last year in spite of the windy weather making it difficult to hear," said Jen Pace with the ANAF. "We felt that the community appreciated our efforts to support them in remembrance. As a volunteer for a veterans organization, this is what we do.”

The ANAF #5 is one of the oldest veterans organizations in Canada gaining its charter in 1919. The Vernon Elks #45 was established in 1920 and has played an active role in the community since that time.

Following the ceremony there will be food and refreshments at both establishments. The ANAF will be hosting guests in their licensed lounge with stew made by their Ladies Auxiliary by donation. The Elks will have hot dogs, chips and refreshments for the whole family.

• Vernon's annual indoor ceremony at KTP is hosted by the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #25.

The ceremony begins at 10 a.m.

• The District of Coldstream invites residents to honour veterans at the Coldstream and Lavington Cenotaphs.

Ceremonies will start at 10:45 a.m. Refreshments will follow.

The Lavington Fire Department will host a pancake breakfast prior to the ceremonies at the hall, 9739 School Road, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.

• In the Village of Lumby, the ceremony at the Cenotaph is slated to begin shortly before 11 a.m.

Light snacks and beverages will follow at the Legion, and families are welcome to enjoy snacks upstairs until 2 p.m.

• The City of Armstrong/Township of Spallumcheen ceremony will be inside the Hassen Arena in Armstrong.

The ceremony will start at around 10:30 a.m. Refreshments will follow.

• Veterans will be honoured and remembered in Enderby at the Cenotaph (Mill Avenue and Belvedere Street). Ceremony starts at 10:45 a.m.

A pipe band will follow to the Legion after the ceremony.

• Westwold Branch #236 of the Royal Canadian Legion will host a ceremony Monday.

Those involved will meet at Westwold School at 10:30 a.m., followed by a march to the Cenotaph at Westwold Church.

The Cenotaph ceremony will commence at 11 a.m.

A potluck luncheon will follow at the Westwold Legion.
