Vernon's fall clear bag leaf pick-up program is coming up soon, set to take place Nov. 18 to 22.
During the one-week program, Emterra Environmental will provide curbside collection of leaves coinciding with regular collection days.
There are only a few things to keep in mind to ensure your leaves are picked up. First and foremost, residents are reminded to use clear plastic bags.
Residents in Vernon can put out an unlimited number of clear bags filled with leaves before 7 a.m. on their designated day, at the same location as their regular yard waste collection.
The city is offering the following tips to make sure leaf collection day goes smoothly:
• All bags must be transparent, allowing the contents to be visible.
• Clear bags weighing more than 23 kilograms (50 pounds) will be considered overweight and won't be picked up.
• Coloured bags will be considered as household garbage and not collected.
• Missed clear bags not reported to the city within 24 hours will not be picked up.
In addition to the clear bag pick-up program, residents can also put leaves and other yard waste in their green-lidded organics carts for weekly collection — but remember:
• All contents must be contained inside the cart and the lid must close.
• Ensure kitchen and yard material is loosely layered inside the cart so it does not get stuck during collection.
• Weight restrictions for Vernon's curbside waste collection carts are 50 kilograms (110 pounds) for 120-litre carts, and 75 kg (165 pounds) for 240-litre carts.
While tidying the yard and collecting leaves, residents are also reminded not to rake material into the street, as this can block storm drains and cause operational issues for street sweepers.
