Job-seekers will have the chance to meet more than 30 local employers and ‘get behind the wheel’ of highway maintenance and road-building equipment.
As well as hosting more than 400 attendees looking for new opportunities, this year’s second annual Job-A-Palooza will host The RoadShow — a 34-foot trailer packed with five simulators and virtual reality technology so people can experience first-hand what it’s like to work in the industry.
“The RoadShow is a really exciting addition to our job fair because it’s such a great introduction to some rewarding and in-demand careers,” says Johanna Currie, with WorkBC Vernon, which is hosting Job-A-Palooza Sept. 26 at the Vernon Lodge, fro 1 to 5 p.m.
The RoadShow, presented by the BC Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association, began its cross-province tour earlier in 2024. One of the RoadShow simulators is The Virage, which lets users experience operating a snowplow, while the Vortex Edge simulates operating equipment like excavators, backhoes and wheel loaders.
For those looking to explore other kinds of careers, there will be much to discover.
Job-A-Palooza will feature booths of employers hiring for a range of both seasonal and year-round opportunities throughout the North Okanagan. It’s a fully accessible event open to the public.
“These are employers who are keen to meet and hire local talent, so it’s a great chance to get your foot in the door whether you’re a recent graduate or you’re curious about exploring options or a change in careers,” says Currie.
Job-seekers are encouraged to visit the WorkBC Centre in Vernon ahead of Job-A-Palooza for help with polishing a resumé and feeling confident at on-the-spot interviews. Job-seekers can learn more about the Resource Centre and upcoming workshops at WorkBC Vernon.
Employers will also have a chance to attend a lunch and learn featuring Nate Toevs from Neil Squire speaking on Assistive Technology Services and WorkBC's Employer Support Team speaking on tools and resources available to employers.
