Skiing might be a favourite winter activity, but not at these temperatures.
Forecasts are calling for temperatures to dip down to -25 degrees Celsius Friday night, -23 Saturday, -22 Sunday and -17 Monday. That’s in town, whereas temperatures up at the ski hills are even colder.
That has forced a full facility closure at Sovereign Lake Nordic Club all day Friday and to be determined Saturday.
“For safety reasons, programs are cancelled, Black Prince Dinner and private lessons,” the club said, urging skiers to watch sovereignlake.com for updates as closures will be posted 24 hours in advance.
“Please dress according to the weather and be aware that skiing during facility closure is at your own risk, our services including first aid will not be available.”
SilverStar Mountain Resort is also closing many lifts and runs, but not all.
“Due to cold temperatures we are only operating the Gondola and Silver Queen lifts today,” the resort said.
Night skiing is also cancelled completely tonight. These closures will likely carry into tomorrow and Sunday.
“We are monitoring the weather closely and the safety of our guests and staff is our priority.”
The Gondola will not be operating for night skiing Saturday.
Rippers, Amped and Freeride programs have also been cancelled for the weekend.
Updates can be found at skisilverstar.com.
