The executive director of the Vernon Public Art Gallery hopes to hang her hat in Victoria.

Dauna Kennedy has announced her candidacy for the BC United party to become MLA of the Vernon-Lumby riding in the 2024 provincial election.

Kennedy made the announcement on social media Thursday, Oct. 12.

“I’m really excited to take on this challenge. I love our community,” said Kennedy. “We have a great riding and I’m just really excited about the opportunity to move forward, take our issues to Victoria, and make some positive change for our community.”

Kennedy’s candidacy has been endorsed by former Okanagan-Vernon MLA Tom Christensen, now a lawyer with Nixon Wenger in Vernon.

The pair made the announcement by video.

Kennedy joins Lumby Mayor and Regional District of North Okanagan chairperson Kevin Acton in declaring their candidacy with BC United, formerly known as the Liberal Party of B.C.

Harwinder Sandhu of the NDP is the sitting MLA for Vernon-Monashee.

Vernon-Lumby will be the new provincial riding, after electoral changes took place due to population changes.

Sandhu won the 2020 election by 424 votes, after mail-in and absentee ballots were counted. She defeated three-term Liberal incumbent Eric Foster of Lumby.

Two North Okanagan women have declared their candidacy for the new Kelowna-Lake Country-Coldstream riding.

Stephanie Hendy will run for the B.C. Green Party, and Amanda Shatzko has thrown her hat into the ring with BC United.

The provincial election is slated to be held on or before Oct. 19, 2024.
