Katrina Redgewell picked up this week’s newspaper at the Vernon Morning Star on Friday, and on a whim, she also bought a pair of Valley Vonka chocolate bars for her two sons.

She’s grateful that she did, because when her son Isaac unwrapped his chocolate bar, he discovered the second golden ticket in the Morning Star’s second annual Valley Vonka and the Hot Chocolates Factory contest.

“I thought it would just be something fun for an after-school treat,” Katrina said. “I gave (the chocolate bars) to them in the car after I picked them up from school.”

Isaac, 16, said he didn’t think he was going to find a golden ticket, but was pleasantly surprised by what he found in the bar made by Cotton’s Chocolates.

Proceeds from the Valley Vonka contest will go to Jumpstart, a community organization that helps kids overcome financial and accessibility barriers to sport and recreation in support of inclusive play for kids of all abilities.

Katrina said she thinks it’s nice to see a “different” sort of fundraiser in support of a cause like Jumpstart.

“It’s always neat to have something that’s exciting and draws people’s attention.”

There are three golden tickets yet to be found. Chocolate bars can be purchased by donation (minimum $5) at The Morning Star, Canadian Tire, Vernon Nissan, FreshCo and Printech.

Each golden ticket is tied to one of five prizes. Those prizes are:

• A hanging chair from Canadian Tire worth $580

• FreshCo gift card worth $1,500

• Spallumcheen Golf and Country Club passes worth $1,500

• Vernon Towne Theatre movie package valued at $1,500

• Ladies World Health and Fitness memberships worth $1,500

Isaac said he’s not much of a golfer, but he’s eyeing the Spallumcheen Golf and Country prize as a way to get into the sport.

The five lucky people finding golden tickets will be required to participate in a contest-ending event tentatively slated for Wednesday, May 22, at the Towne Theatre.

All golden tickets must be found and claimed by 4 p.m. Friday, May 17, and brought to the Morning Star offices for verification.
