The Vernon Watkin Motors Mustangs are one game away from the perfect tournament.
The under-13 hockey club will face off against the Penticton Knights in the A final of the 51st annual Coca Cola Classic hockey tournament.
Vernon defeated the St. Albert Stars, 7-2 in the semifinal on Saturday to punch their ticket to the final. Thompson Podollan scored twice and assisted once for the Mustangs, while Rowan McGrath chipped in with a goal and two helpers. They are 4-0 so far, with the only other undefeated team being the Knights, who beat the California Goldrush, 5-4 in the other semifinal.
After demolishing the Okotoks Oilers in their opener, 11-0, the Mustangs then edged California, 5-4, before eviscerating the Calgary Royals, 7-3.
Vernon has reached the A final 13 times in the tournament’s 51 years, and has won the tournament the last seven times they’ve been in the championship game.
Penticton has reached the A final only once, losing 5-1 to Edmonton in 1999. There has never been an A final contested between two Okanagan teams, until now.
The game will start at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 11 from Kal Tire Place North.
