Vernon dancer claims international silver medal

Rebecca Acob finished second in the world in the juvenile category

A Vernon teen has continued her prowess in Highland Dance, as she won silver at an international competition.

Rebecca Acob finished second in the juvenile division (ages 12-15) at the Cowal World Highland Dance Championships, hosted in Dunoon, Scotland from Aug. 29-31.

Acob became the 16 and under Canadian champion at Nationals in Kamloops in July. That victory gave her the opportunity to compete across the pond.

The 15-year-old competed at the games in Scotland, first winning a qualifying round, which gave her the title of Scottish Highland Dancing Champion in the age-15 category.

At the final competition, Acob had to battle other dancers aged 12, 13, 14 and 15, finishing in second. First place went to Ontario's Aisla Gocan-Wright.

Teacher Cheryl Rosborough from the Aviemore School of Highland Dance accompanied Acob during the Scottish event.
