Even with some rain, local residents are being warned about the risk of wildfire.

Lumby firefighters had to douse an abandoned campfire on Saddle Mountain Sunday at about 7 p.m.

“There is always a concern with abandoned fires,” said Tony Clayton, fire chief.

“The stuff (forest fuels) under the trees is still pretty dry.”

This was the first time the department had been called to a campfire on Saddle Mountain.

“It’s a rugged spot to get into. It took about an hour of finding a road to get into it,” said Clayton.

The site was about a quarter-of-a-kilometre from the nearest home.

“Campfires are allowed but make sure they are less than half-a-metre in size and put them out,” said Clayton.

Lumby crews also tackled two grassfires late last week.

They were either caused by exhaust from a vehicle or a tow rope being dragged on the ground creating sparks.

“It definitely wasn’t cigarette butts,” said Clayton.
