Residents are urged to be cautious with fire as conditions are dry.
An alert has been issued after firefighters responded to a blaze in Becker Park, next to the Vernon Curling Club, Tuesday at 4 p.m.
“It’s dry out there,” said Jack Blair, deputy fire chief.
While open burning for agricultural operations is wrapping up, there is a concern about cigarette butts and camp fires.
“Things are drier earlier than expected this year,” said Blair.
Firefighters became aware of the Becker Park blaze after receiving calls from residents.
The fire covered a 30-foot-by-20-foot area and was extinguished quickly.
The cause of the fire has not been determined but transients occasionally gather in the park.
“It seems to be a bit of a hangout and there was debris around,” said Blair of where the fire began.
