Canada beats Russia 5-1 to advance to semifinals at World Women’s Under 18 Hockey Championships

Vernon’s Anne Cherkowski scored once as Canada clinched a semifinal spot at the Women’s World Under 18 Hockey Championships in Obihiro, Japan, Tuesday, with a 5-1 win over Russia.

It was Cherkowski’s first goal of the championships. She scored against Russia in a pre-tournament game.

Canada finished preliminary round play with a 2-1 record, and receive a bye to the semifinals with the U.S., who went 3-0.

Alexie Guay had a goal and two assists for Canada, who will play the winner of a quarterfinal match between Russia and Switzerland in a semifinal Saturday.

Sweden will take on Finland in the other quarterfinal, with the winner playing the U.S.

The championship game is Sunday.
