The City of Armstrong is reeling after the loss of a veteran council member.

Ron O'Sullivan, better known as Sully, died unexpectedly Friday at the age of 79.

"He's a legend and it's pretty sad," said Mayor Chris Pieper.

O'Sullivan had served on council for 17 years, with his most recent re-election occurring in 2014.

He had moved to Armstrong from Richmond 19 years ago and immediately got involved in the community.

"He jumped into everything," said Pieper.

Memorial service arrangements are currently being organized and details will be made available on the city’s website once they are finalized.

O'Sullivan's death means the city will have to hold a byelection.

"We will do something in the fall," said Pieper.

The next regular election is in November 2018.
