Athletics park usage under review

Greater Vernon Advisory Committee directors have asked staff for statistics on usage

Firm data is wanted for the Greater Vernon Athletics Park.

Greater Vernon Advisory Committee directors have asked staff for statistics on usage since the $8.5 million facility opened last fall.

“There’s been a lot of positive feedback from users,” said Keith Pinkoski, parks manager.

The staff report will primarily look at organized groups, such as soccer and football, and how much time they book at the park.

But beyond those groups, residents are making their way to the facility.

“There is a lot of use by casual users,” said David Sewell, Regional District of North Okanagan chief administrative officer.

“As you drive by, you will see people walking the track.”

Plug pulled on water purchase

A politician wants assurances that a Coldstream orchardist is aware of long-term irrigation plans.

The Greater Vernon Advisory Committee has turned down a water allocation purchase for a Reid Road farm because separation of irrigation water from domestic water has not occurred yet.

However, director Mike Macnabb says GVAC staff need to communicate timelines for separation with the property owner.

“These folks put up a lot of cash to start the orchard and they need to know,” he said.

Until separation occurs, the property owner could join forces with neighbours to install the required water system.

“We will sit down with the applicant and discuss the options so they know what’s going on,” said Dale McTaggart, the Regional District of North Okanagan’s general manager of engineering.
