Awards honour community leaders

The Morning Star is looking for nominations of those who are making significant, positive contributions to our area

The entire North Okanagan is known for its incredible generosity and ability to step up in support of various causes and groups.

And now is the time to recognize those who go above and beyond to make our community such a great place.

The Morning Star is looking for nominations of those who are making significant, positive contributions to our area for the inaugural Community Leader Awards.

“These people are true community leaders and can be found in schools, on a sports field, in care centres, at the food bank and at many local events that take place in and around our community,” said Ian Jensen, Morning Star publisher. “Many of these wonderful people have families of their own but still find the time to make a difference by sharing their empathy, enthusiasm, inspiration and energy.”

Individuals and organizations can nominate residents by writing an approximately 250-word submission about the nominee’s service and sending it to The Morning Star in person at 4407-25th Aveneu, email to contests@vernonmorningstar.com or online via vernonmorningstar.com/contests. The submission deadline is April 26.

There are 10 categories of nominations: Coach, Mentor, Courage, Above and Beyond, Emergency Service, Service Organization Volunteer, Volunteer, Youth Volunteer, Environmental Leader and Community Builder. For category details see page A4 of today’s newspaper.

With the help of more than 20 community partners from various local organizations, all submissions will be reviewed and a voting process will determine the top three in each category.

The top honour, as well as two honourable mentions, in each category will be celebrated at a special awards night in June. They will also be featured in a special publication in The Morning Star following the awards.

“The Vernon Morning Star would like to create an annual event that recognizes and honours the commitment and efforts that are essential to maintaining and supporting our growing community,” said Jensen. “By highlighting these inspirational stories, our hope is that others will be encouraged to contribute their compassion, knowledge and enthusiasm along with those around them.”

Businesses or organizations interested in supporting the awards by becoming category sponsors are also needed. Those interested can contact their Morning Star advertising representative or the publisher.
