Becker Park fires generate concern

Authorities are on alert after a second grass fire broke out right in the middle of Vernon.

Firefighters were called to the west side of Becker Park, behind the Vernon Curling Club, Wednesday at about 6:15 a.m.

“It was a small, suspicious fire,” said Gord Molendyk, RCMP spokesperson.

“There was also a small fire there two weeks ago as well.”

A cause for Wednesday’s blaze has not been determined and it remains under investigation.

“There was no one in the area and officers took photographs of the scene,” said Molendyk.

The fire was about two feet-by-20 feet in size.

“We seem to get a lot of fire starts in there,” said Lawrie Skolrood, deputy fire chief.

“There’s a  concern with wildfire interface right in the city.”

Because of ongoing challenges over the years, authorities have placed considerable focus on Becker Park.

“There’s been fuel modification in there and that took away some of the risk (of fire),” said Skolrood.
