Sicamous has earned bragging rights for being the number one sledding area in Western Canada.
Pitted against 63 other snowmobile destinations, from Beausejour, Man. to Kelowna, B.C., Sicamous was voted the winner of snoriderswest.com’s Sledtown Showdown.
Around 15,000 votes were cast in the 12-week competition that saw Sicamous first win best sledding destination in B.C., and then Western Canada.
Eagle Valley Snowmobile Club general manager Gord Bushell thanks the community and everybody who supported Sicamous in the showdown. In addition to bragging rights, he said the club will also receive a trophy and some advertising dollars in Snoriders Magazine.
“It’s been a team effort by the community and all the supporters of sledding in Sicamous and all the people that visit here,” said Bushell.
Sicamous’ growing popularity among the sledding community was evident this year.
“Our numbers were really up between Dec. 26 and Jan. 1,” said Bushell. “It was good to see all the folks in town. I think just that week alone we had about 3,500 riders in town. So that was a really busy time for us.”
For several years now, Sicamous, it’s groomed sledding hills and various businesses have been honoured with top awards in Snoriders’ Rider’s Choice Awards. The Sledtown Showdown win is another tool the club can use to attract new riders to the community.
“We can leverage that to market in eastern Canada and Europe because we’ve got Europeans and Americans coming up…,” said Bushell, adding the club is looking at having a booth at upcoming shows in Washington and Ontario.
