Flames shoot out of the roof of a house on Valleyview Place in Vernon Wednesday night.

Flames roared through a South Vernon home Wednesday night.

Reports started coming in before 6 p.m. that a fire had broke out in the 4700 block of Valleyview Place.

“It was engulfed in flames by the time the fire department arrived,” said Dennis Frick, a neighbour who called 911.

It’s believed flames were shooting 20 to 30 feet in the air at one point and the smoke could be seen throughout Vernon.

“The heat was so intense. The flames were going up in funnels,” said Rory White, who lives nearby.

What remained of the shingle roof was blown apart as firefighters blasted the structure with a steady stream of foam.

Firefighters admit the blaze was challenging.

“The fire was up in the roof right away and it ran the length of the roof,” said Capt. Chris Robinson.

“That made it hard to fight.”

Robinson says no one was home when the fire broke out.

A cause has not been determined and investigators will be back on scene Thursday.
