The recent rash of suspicious fires in Vernon continued Tuesday when a boat for sale went up in smoke.
An 18-foot recreational ski boat that the owner was trying to sell was parked on a trailer at the corner of the Hoban Equipment Parking Lot at 48th Avenue and 24th Street.
Vernon Fire Rescue Services received the call just after 11 p.m.
“It is suspicious and our investigators along with the RCMP are looking into it,” said Jack Blair, VFRS’ deputy chief of operations. “This fire would be the largest in terms of dollar loss of the recent rash of fires.”
Other suspicious fires of late include a midnight blaze Friday in a pile of railway ties in the 4400 block of 31st Street; a portable outhouse was set ablaze Monday morning on Turtle Mountain; and, just before midnight Monday, crews were called to a fire at a vacant, boarded-up building at 24th Avenue and 34A Street.
Vernon RCMP are not certain if the fires are the work of one person.
“At this point, we don’t know,” said RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk Wednesday. “We are looking to see if there is anything that links these fires together.”
Anybody with any information on the fires is asked to call the Vernon RCMP (250-545-7171), the Vernon Fire Department (250-550-3569) or Crime Stoppers (1-800-222-8477).
