The North Okanagan-Shuswap School District is starting to develop a process for its 2017/18 budget.

Various activities could influence the North Okanagan-Shuswap School District’s 2017/18 budget.

On Tuesday, trustee Mike McKay received presentations on the district student achievement plan, early development vulnerabilities and how Shuswap Middle School is helping students increase their basic math skills.

“This type of information has to drive upcoming budget discussions,” said McKay.

“We can’t talk about the budget in a silo of its own.”

McKay also received information about the work being done on the district’s strategic plan.

“This was outstanding information that will help us know what directions we need to go,” he said.

The district’s 2017/18 budget timeline is just being developed and a consultation schedule and meeting schedule will be presented at the Feb. 14 board meeting.

Another factor that will have financial implications for the district is enrolment.

According to the latest figures, enrolment has climbed by 20 students since November.

“Usually, September 30 is when we have the most students and the numbers stay pretty close to the same or decline from there. Our numbers don’t usually go up,” said Glenn Borthistle, superintendent.

The total student population for the district is currently 5,937.
