Potential bus route extensions have sparked debate among Vernon School District trustees.

Suggested amendments to a transport services management regulation dominated the conversation as the board of education met Wednesday.

The suggested changes would allow for route extensions depending upon the number of eligible students living beyond a bus stop, taking road conditions, availability of turn around and the impact on the existing run schedule under consideration by the supervisor of transportation in discussion with the transporting driver before route adaptations are made.

“I’m a bit concerned with this,” said school board chairperson Kelly Smith, citing financial concerns over potential costs of route extensions and the resulting impact on budget.

Trustee Doris Squair, however, supports the changes.

“The (financial) impact would not be great,” Squair said. “If there becomes any abuse or miss-use, then we would revisit it.”

Suggested changes, if passed, would remove the current six or more students living beyond the 2.4 km walk to a bus stop required to extend bus routes.

“We have to remember that our district put in a plan that said fairness to all students,” Squair said.

Trustee Robert Lee agreed.

“I know we have a finite amount of money and that should be spent on education. Transportation is part of that,” Lee said. “Right now, when we have kids we could be servicing better, that needs to be a priority.”

The board of education took the information into consideration for decision at a future meeting.
