BX grass fire prompts warning

On Sunday at about 4 p.m., firefighters responded to a small grass fire in the 8000 block of Wallace Road.

BX residents are being warned that wildfires pose a significant threat to the community.

On Sunday at about 4 p.m., BX-Swan Lake firefighters responded to a small grass fire in the  8000 block of Wallace Road.

“It crept into one birch tree but it was completely manageable,” said Stephen Hidasi, deputy fire chief.

It’s been determined the fire was human-caused although specifics aren’t known yet.

“We don’t know if it was malicious or accidental,” said Hidasi.

With the North Okanagan experiencing warm conditions, Hidasi us urging residents to be careful with fire.

“It becomes frustrating because people think others do this and not their friends or kids,” he said. “We can control our actions in the woods or  along roadways. Be accountable for your actions.”

Hidasi says residents should consider everything they do, including having a campfire.

“Ask yourself, ‘Is it worth the risk?””
