A taxi driver in Kelowna was robbed and assaulted last Monday evening and now police are looking for the suspect.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Lawrence Avenue and Richter Street about 8:30 p.m. on March 27.

Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey says the taxi driver picked up a man near a business in the 700 block of Harvey Avenue and brought him to a location in Rutland before driving the man back downtown.

“It is alleged that the suspect physically attacked and threatened the cab driver when asked to pay his cab fare of over $45,” states O’Donaghey. “According to the victim, the suspect allegedly choked, punched and threatened the cab driver with what appeared to be used needles.”

The victim sustained what police describe as non-life threatening injuries during the attack.

The suspect took off on foot with the cab driver’s cell phone.

He is described as:

  • Aboriginal man
  • slim build,
  • approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall
  • wearing a hooded beige jacket, jeans and a blue baseball cap.

RCMP have distributed the photo at the top of the story of the alleged robbery suspect in hopes the public can aid investigators with the identity of the man.

Anyone able to identify the robbery suspect or anyone with any information is asked to contact the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.
