Cause of Fatheads Fire determined

Investigators have pinpointed the source of a fire that destroyed a Vernon business.

Electrical problems are believed to be the cause of the fire that broke out at Fatheads Coffee Co., in the 2500 block of 15th Street, at about midnight Saturday.

“The point of origin was in the middle of the building near the ceiling,” said Lawrie Skolrood, deputy fire chief.

“There were a number of electrical cables going through the wall and it caused an arc.”

The value of the damage has not been determined and it’s not known if the structure can be rebuilt.

“The second-storey side is significantly damaged,” said Skolrood, who added that smoke and heat damage was done to the residence at the rear of the building.

The property owner’s insurance company will determine what happens to the building.

Firefighters were on scene until about 4 a.m. Saturday and then they were back just after 6 a.m. to deal with hot spots.

“We were dealing with sawdust or shaving insulation and add-ons to the building which made extinguishing the fire difficult,” said Skolrood.
