North Okanagan residents can share the Christmas spirit with those who may not family nearby or a place to call home.

The Upper Room Mission is currently collecting backpacks and the filled bags will be handed out to the agency’s clients during the holidays.

“They get really excited about it,” said Lisa Anderson, director of resource development.

About 250 backpacks were handed out last year, and in many cases, they are the only gift the individual will receive.

Backpacks are generally filled with practical items that meet the daily needs of the clients.

They can include socks, gloves, toques, small notepads and pens, flashlights and toiletry items like shampoo, conditioner, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, razors, Kleenex and Band-Aids.

However, special items are also encouraged like Christmas candies, crossword puzzles and gift cards.

“A Christmas card is also nice as it may be the only one they get,” said Anderson.

Label your backpack either male or female and they will be given out during a Christmas dinner Dec. 23. Backpacks may be dropped off by Dec. 21 at the mission.

Another way to support the Upper Room Mission is by sponsoring a meal.

“Gather some of your co-workers together, or make it a special family event, and put together a meal that you can serve up to those in need,” said Anderson.

“Of course, monetary donations are always needed and greatly appreciated.”

Donations can me made at at www.upperroommission.ca or drop by 3403 27th Ave. For more information, call 250-549-1231 ext. 29 or e-mail lisa.anderson@vernonurm.org.

URM provides three meals a day, five days a week, to families, seniors, the disabled, and the homeless.

“On average, the mission serves 325 to 400 meals a day, and relies on the generosity of donors to provide much-needed services,” said Anderson.
