The City of Vernon insists it’s not ignoring bumpy conditions on local roads.

Permanent repair of potholes will begin April 10 and continue throughout the summer, while the repainting of road lines will start in May.

“In order to permanently repair potholes that are formed over the winter, weather conditions must be warm and dry,” said Tanya Laing Gahr, city communications officer.

“Because of the water penetration over the winter, the city has reported an increase in the number and severity of potholes.”

Residents have also expressed concerns that the paint used for road lines doesn’t withdtand winter conditions.

“The road marking paint used is federally regulated under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, which limits the use of volatile organic compounds in road paint products. Following this change in the Act, an industry-wide shift away from oil-based paints to latex-based paints took place, resulting in reduced durability,” said Laing Gahr.

The city understands residents’ concerns with road conditions and wishes to reassure citizens that repairing and maintaining our streets is a top priority. Staff continue to explore new products and more efficient procedures that increase the longevity of road marking, repairs and overall road maintenance at a sustainable cost.
