An extended weekend is over for Enderby high school students.
Classes will be back in session at A.L. Fortune Secondary Tuesday after a fire forced students to evacuate April 8. Classes were not in session Monday as cleanup was required.
"We are pleased to have our students and staff returning to the important learning that takes place at A.L. Fortune every day," said Carl Cooper, North Okanagan-Shuswap School District director of instruction.
One wing of the school will be closed for a few days and a couple of classrooms will be shut down for construction of a new wall.
While cleaning up over the weekend, it was determined that the mud (used to drywall) from the time period when the school was constructed contains asbestos.
Since the washroom and one classroom wall were damaged by fire and water, and the mud was no longer encapsulated, an environmental services company was brought in to assess the hazardous materials.
"The asbestos was removed Monday to WorkSafe B.C. standards. Air quality was monitored throughout," said Cooper.
The fire remains under investigation by the RCMP and is considered suspicious.
