Coldstream tightens spending

Coldstream council instructed managers Monday to review departmental budgets and identify areas where efficiencies can be gained.

Belt-tightening is underway in Coldstream.

Council instructed managers Monday to review  departmental budgets and identify areas where efficiencies can be gained.

“I expect that staff does that as part of their regular tasks but it’s a tight budget year and we want staff to take another look,” said Coun. Pat Cochrane.

“Perhaps there are savings that could be found that don’t impact operations.”

Coun. Gyula Kiss doesn’t believe the council edict indicates there are financial problems looming.

“It’s just normal procedure, it’s always done,” he said of staff reviewing spending habits.

Coun. Richard Enns added that there is a need to ensure tax dollars are being used wisely.

“Obviously we are trying to watch the budget process,” he said.

Planning for the municipality’s 2012 financial plan is currently underway.

Council has also asked staff to prepare a draft policy so grant applications from non-profit groups can be evaluated.
