Coldstream turns on topic of water

Greater Vernon Water rates are set to increase 3.7 per cent annually for three years.

Ongoing water rate increases are leaving some feeling tapped.

Greater Vernon Water rates are set to increase 3.7 per cent annually for three years.

“At some point it gets a little silly to keep increasing the rates when you have money in the bank,” said Coldstream Coun. Pat Cochrane. “Really, all they have been doing over the last several years is taking our money without spending any of it.”

The topic of water rates will be flowing in Coldstream Tuesday, Jan. 3 at the committee of the whole, in advance of the Greater Vernon Advisory Committee meeting Thursday, Jan. 5.

The ongoing debate over the years is whether it’s fair to make current users pay for something that benefits future users.

“You have to have a benefit for the people who pay,” said Coun. Gyula Kiss.
