Internal operations could be reduced at Vernon city hall.
Council is debating its committee structure and whether some committees are abandoned.
“We’ve been interested in rationalization of the committee process for some time,” said Mayor Rob Sawatzky.
In recent years, the number of committees has climbed from five to about 20. They range from accessibility and economic development to environmental, parking and transportation demand management.
“They take a lot of staff and council work,” said Sawatzky, adding that the issue of committees was raised by KPMG in last year’s core services review.
“We want to make them more efficient while providing the services the committees provide.”
Committee membership can include councillors, city staff and community volunteers.
Sawatzky would not speculate on what committees may be eliminated, if any. However, he did point out that some groups should have a natural shelf life.
“If some committees do work well and establish frameworks, they don’t need to exist (forever),” he said.
