Costs may be tweaked for Greater Vernon sports complex

Officials want to ensure the project succeeds when it goes to referendum

The cost of a proposed sports complex next to Okanagan College may change.

The Greater Vernon Advisory Committee instructed staff Wednesday to examine the estimated costs of the running track and sports field with the intention of reducing the cost. The April 6 referendum presently asks for $8.5 million to be borrowed.

“This exercise could be beneficial in getting it accepted by the community more,” said director Jim Garlick.

As part of the review process, any changes to the project meet the terms of the lease agreement with Okanagan College.

Options may include removing items, reducing the scale of items or phasing in at a later date.

The requirement for offsite works, such as sidewalks and storm sewer, will also be negotiated with the District of Coldstream.

“We have to balance the wish list with the ability of the community (to pay),” said director Rob Sawatzky.
