Cougar spotted near Landing school

Measures were taken to protect students at a Vernon school after a cougar sighting Wednesday

Measures were taken to protect students at a Vernon school after a cougar sighting Wednesday.

Staff at Okanagan Landing Elementary received a call at about 10:30 a.m. from a neighbour who stated they had observed a cougar.

Students were outside at the time for recess.

“All of the kids were brought in,” said Colleen Harvie, vice-principal.

“Conservation officers were called and they searched the area.”

In mid-December, there were also reports of a cougar near Mission Hill Elementary.

However, conservation officers determined that  tracks in that case actually belonged to a large house cat.

Conservation officers could not be reached for comment about the case at Okanagan Landing Elementary.
