Spallumcheen politicians had a direct say in who will represent them regionally.
Secret ballots were used Monday to select Coun. Dave Brew as the township’s director to the Regional District of North Okanagan. Also seeking the positions were Councillors Janice Brown and Christine Fraser.
“I thought this was better,” said Mayor Will Hansma of council voting instead of the traditional method of mayor and council appointing an individual.
“I have a lot of respect for the three individuals and I didn’t want to make a choice. This makes it more open and transparent.”
The RDNO seat became available after Hansma decided that he no longer could attend meetings.
“I find myself too busy to be there,” he said of work commitments.
“It (meetings) takes up another day every other week and there’s a day to get ready with the agenda.”
Hansma’s decision, though, does not impact his status with the township.
“I want to make sure I have the time to do the job that is important which is mayor,” he said.
Brew says he’s pleased with the endorsement of his fellow councillors.
“I’ve wanted to sit there for nine years,” he said.
“I think it will be interesting. I will bring input back from the regional board to our council.”
Hansma will serve as Spallumcheen’s alternate director to RDNO if Brew is unable to attend meetings.
