Crew contains blaze

Fire crews managed to contain a closet fire in a Vernon apartment to the one unit Saturday morning.

Vernon Fire Rescue crews were called to the 3600 block of 27th Avenue just after 1 a.m.

Two occupants were home at the time, but were not harmed. Instead, efforts were made prior to the fire department’s arrival to douse the blaze.

But it’s believed a water pipe break extinguished much of the fire, which remains under investigation.

“There was a lot of damage done by water,” said Lawrie Skolrood, deputy fire chief.
