It’s still not known what led to a wildfire in a Vernon neighbourhood.

While the Ministry of Forests has indicated that Saturday’s blaze on Tronson Road may be human-caused, the Vernon Fire Department is remaining cautious.

“We’re working with the ministry to determine the cause,” said Keith Green, Vernon fire chief.

“As you gather data, you start to rule out or pinpoint things.”

The fire broke out at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday on a hill near the Tavistock development and ground crews from the B.C. Wildfire Service were brought in to help Vernon firefighters. The blaze was also bucketed by helicopter.

“I am totally proud of the guys and their efforts to put it out,” said Green.

“It’s one of the toughest terrain fires I’ve been on. It could have been worse but we’re lucky the winds died down.”

Vernon firefighters, with assistance from Coldstream, monitored the scene throughout the weekend.

“Things are pretty much under control but there are roots that could still be active, and they can flare up,” said Green.

An evacuation order for about 60 residents of Adventure Bay was rescinded Sunday morning and no structures were damaged by the fire.

Green insists the fire is a reminder to residents to be prepared for an emergency.

“People need a grab and go bag so they are not deciding what to take at the 11th hour,” he said.
