Stage 2 water restrictions are now in effect in Salmon Arm.
The city announced the change on Wednesday, July 12, in response to drought conditions, increased demand and Shuswap Lake being low.
Stage 2 water restrictions allow for outdoor water use two days per week based on your address, for a maximum of two hours per day. Water use in Tuesdays and Fridays for residences with address numbers ending in 00 to 33, Wednesdays and Saturdays for addresses ending in 34 to 66, and Sundays and Thursdays for addresses ending in 67 to 99.
The city said further restrictions will come into effect should more severe drought conditions occur.
On designated watering days, the maximum two-hour watering allotment may occur within only one of the following time periods: 7 to 11 a.m., 7 to 11 p.m. or from midnight to 7 a.m.
Properties over 1/2 acre (0.2 hectares) in size are not permitted to irrigate with city water. This includes properties with farm status.
The City of Salmon Arm’s new watering restrictions were prompted in part by the level 4 drought and record-breaking daily water demands experienced in the summer of 2021. The current staged restrictions begin at Stage 1, which is in effect year-round (unless further restrictions are put in place), and allows for watering three days a week in the time period mentioned above. At Stage 3, water use is permitted one day per week and at Stage 4, watering is not permitted.
Residents are to be notified of the water stage changes through sign boards placed around town, as well as local media, social media and the city’s website.
Failure to comply with the city’s water restrictions may result in a fine, metered water rates, or a discontinuation of service.
