Drowning victim located in Lake Country

On Sunday at about 7:29 p.m., Lake Country RCMP were alerted to a capsized canoe in Okanagan Lake

There’s been a tragic end to a search in Lake Country.

The body of Arlene Susan Westervelt, 56, of Lake Country was recovered from Okanagan Lake Monday after she fell out of a canoe Sunday at about 7:29 p.m.

“The RCMP dive team located the woman’s body about 35 metres from where she was last seen,” said Const. Kelly Brett, with the Kelowna RCMP.

On Sunday, Westervelt and a family member were in a canoe near the 9300 block of Okanagan Centre Road West when it tipped over about 100 feet from shore.

The family member was rescued by a passing boater, but Westervelt could not be found.

The RCMP dive team found her body the next day in about 12 metres of water about 24 metres from shore. No lifejackets were seen on the couple.

“The RCMP are reminding residents and tourists to always practise boat safety by wearing lifejackets at all times when on the water,” said Brett.
