Enderby considers funds

City council received a financial request Monday from the Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs

There is pressure to keep Enderby youth active.

City council received a financial request Monday from the Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs to provide funding for an additional day of after-school programs.

“We are interested in supporting something like that but we want to know what their mandate is and how the money will be spent,” said Coun. Brian Schreiner.

Currently, the program runs one day a week from September until June.

The projected cost for an additional day would be $7,453

“The school-based recreation program has proved to be popular and is at full capacity,” said Kirstie Blanleil, Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs area director.

The focus of the program is children between the ages of six and 12.

“A number of families in Enderby with young children are unable to register for mainstream recreation sports due to financial barriers, transportation or other challenges,” said Blanleil.

While the financial request was received Monday, no action was taken by the city.

“We had three people missing from council so we deferred the discussion,” said Schreiner.

“They (club) will also come and make a presentation.”
