Enderby firefighters extinguish mill blaze

Enderby firefighters were quick to respond to a mill fire Monday.

Crews were called to reports of a blaze at a mill on Highway 97, next to the Starlight Drive-In, at 4 p.m.

“We were able to put it out pretty quickly,” said chief Kevin Alstad.

The fire apparently started when an individual at the mill was using an old oil furnace to construct a kiln to dry lumber.

A cause has not been determined but it’s possible some residual oil in the furnace may have been accidentally ignited.

“He lost the lumber he was drying and an old truck body was impacted,” said Alstad.

“The fire didn’t get into the main buildings.”
