Enderby is moving towards banning smoking within six metres of playgrounds.

Smokers are facing tighter rules in Enderby, but only in limited places.

Council gave three readings Monday to a bylaw that would ban smoking within six metres of a playground, instead of thecurrent three metres.

“People can still smoke. They just have to be further away. We think it’s fair,” said Coun. Brian Schreiner.

However, while Lumby has banned smoking near all parks, Enderby isn’t including recreational areas beyonf playgrounds.

“We will take a softer approach with designated smoking areas but if it continues to be a problem, we will take a look at it(ban),” said Mayor Greg McCune.

No smoking signs will be posted at parks encouraging people not to light up there.

A survey on smoking was recently conducted and 113 people participated.

The results showed that 84.1 per cent wanted smoking banned near playgrounds while 69 per cent don’t want it on beaches.Of the 20 smokers surveyed, 55 per cent supported some form of regulations in parks.

Seven per cent of all respondents stated smoking should be allowed in all locations.

The bylaw must still be adopted by Enderby council.
