Evacuation order lifted for Lavington residents

Residents were evacuated in part of Lavington after a natural gas break

Lavington residents are back home.

At just before 10 p.m. Thursday, the evacuation of residents in part of Lavington was lifted.

The evacuation occurred fallowing disruption of natural gas service Thursday morning when a motor vehicle struck a high-pressure natural gas line at Highway 6 and Park Lane.

As a result of the accident, Highway 6 was closed and Lavington Elementary was evacuated.

Fortis advises that when gas service is lost, each home must be visited by Fortis to shut off service to the meter. Once the damaged pipeline is repaired, it is reactivated and Fortis then revisits each customer again to restore service to the meter and relight each natural gas appliance in the home.

The evacuation of residents in a section of Lavington remains in effect remains in affect because of a natural gas break.

Crews hope to restore natural gas service late Thursday but a timeline for when residents may be able to return to their homes is currently unknown.

A reception centre for evacuated residents remains open at the Coldstream Women’s Institute at 9909 Kalamalka Rd.

Fortis would like to remind their customers to follow these safety tips to avoid problems with carbon monoxide:

Never operate a barbecue, camp stove or lantern in an enclosed space

When heating your home with a wood-burning fireplace, open the damper and partially open a window or door at or below the level of the fireplace when the fireplace is in use; close thedamper after each fire, but only after the ashes are cool. When gas service is lost, each home must be visited by FortisBC to shut off service to the meter. Once the damaged pipeline is repaired, it is reactivated and Fortis then revisits each customer again to restore service to the meter and relight each natural gas appliance in the home.

Residents are advised to check the Fortis website (www.fortisbc.com) for further updates. More information will be released as it becomes known.
