Authorities were left scrambling with two suspected cases of explosives in Greater Vernon.

On Monday, a section of the Sidewinder Trail in Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park was closed off after a resident reported finding what was believed to be an explosive.

“The military explosives unit confirmed it was the back end of a mortar,” said Sgt. Colby Attlesey, with the RCMP.

The mortar didn’t present any risk, but explosives are found occasionally in Kal park because the area was used as a training ground during the Second World War.

And on Monday night at about 9 p.m., a resident reported a suspected explosive in the back parking lot at Vernon’s Marshall Field.

Police secured the area and the RCMP’s explosives unit disposed of the item at about 4 a.m. Tuesday.

The item may have been made out of a fire extinguisher and it’s not known if it had the potential to explode.

“We are still investigating,” said Attlesey.
