A BX family escaped a massive fire that engulfed their home Monday night.

Flames roared through the 3,800 square-foot, two-storey house on Pheasant Road at about 6:30 p.m.

“The residents were just barely able to get out with nothing,” said Bill Wacey, BX-Swan Lake fire chief.

The family was eating dinner when they smelled smoke. Going into the laundry room door, they discovered a wall of flames and fled the building.

Firefighters leaving their homes had an early sense of what they were responding to.

“They got out of their doors and they could see the flames were through the roof. It went up fast,” said Wacey.

“I was surprised that it took off so fast.”

All of the contents in the home were destroyed, as were four trucks and a car in the garage.

“Nothing was saved,” said Wacey.

Quick action prevented the fire from spreading to a shop containing acetylene tanks and equipment.

Along with the BX-Swan Lake firefighters, assistance came from the Coldstream Fire Department.

Investigators are on scene Tuesday trying to determine the cause of the fire and where it started.

“It’s going go to be tough,” said Wacey referring to the extent of the debris.

An excavator is needed to reveal hot spots.
