The City of Vernon has created a new draft design concept for the proposed athletic park at the former Kin Race Track site, and with that, the public has been re-invited to share their feedback on the project.
The proposed Active Living Centre is one of the amenities officials are planning to integrate into the park behind Kal Tire Place. As residents indicated in a late 2021 survey, the site is a valued space for running and walking, sporting and cultural events, festivals, markets and general green-space enjoyment.
The first round of concept plans were shown to council on Jan. 10, at which point council asked for a new plan that incorporates additional sports amenities on the site.
On April 25, council endorsed the new draft concept, which the city has published on engagevernon.ca while launching a second survey for residents to share their thoughts.
“We want Kin Race Track Athletic Park to offer a variety of recreational opportunities, with something everyone can be excited about,” said Mayor Victor Cumming. “As a growing and thriving community, we want to ensure this park meets the needs of Vernon for years to come while offering an exciting destination for our visitors and for hosting sporting and cultural events.”
The survey is open until May 23. A summary of the responses and a final concept design will be put before council on June 13.
Initial site preparation and construction of the park is expected to begin this fall.
