UPDATE: Fire crews respond to blaze at Kelowna landfill

A fire started at the Glenmore landfill at approximately 7p.m.

UPDATE: 10:50 p.m.

Capital News was contacted by someone with knowledge of the Glenmore Landfill, who said the area where the fire is burning could be where lithium ion batteries are deposited.

The landfill has a water tender and excavator on site and city crews have worked closely together with the fire department to extinguish blazes of similar size.

UPDATE: 9:48 p.m.

Flames can still be seen rising from the Glenmore Landfill as fire crews continue to battle the blaze that was first spotted at about 7 p.m, Monday.

While it is raining on scene, there is a light wind blowing in the area.

RCMP and BC Ambulance are staged on Glenmore Road North. The Salvation Army donation vehicle was also seen entering the landfill from Glenmore Road.

Drivers are asked to slow down and pay attention while travelling on Glenmore, as emergency crews are on scene.

The Kelowna Fire Department is working to manage a blaze at the Glenmore Landfill.

The fire was first spotted at approximately 7 p.m. and is producing a significant amount of black smoke.

Crews are currently on scene with three engines, a tender and a command unit. Glenmore Road North and John Hindle Drive remain open, while fire crews are on scene.

The cause is not yet known.
