Vernon firefighters are urging the community to get behind those in need during Christmas.
Department members have been volunteering their off-duty time to ring the bells at Salvation Army kettles.
“The Salvation Army still needs another $72,000 in donations to reach its target before Christmas,” said Brent Bond, Vernon Professional firefighters president.
This year’s kettle campaign goal is $140,000.
“We encourage groups and individuals to donate,” said Bond.
Besides kettles located throughout the community, financial donations can also be made at www.vernonbcfoodbank.com or at 3303 32nd Ave.
The Kraft Canada daily voting for food banks is still on until Dec. 31. First place in each of five regions will receive a $5,000 bonus.
“All we need to get into first place is for half of Vernon e-mail address holders to vote once. Voting twice would get us well ahead,” said David MacBain, Salvation Army community ministries director.
